french fries

french fries, originally uploaded by umami88.
we grew up on french fries and gravy thanks in large part to our grandma who used to take us shopping at the Bay in Winnipeg followed by none other than fries and gravy at the Paddlewheel restaurant. we loved it!  years later in Vancouver, we discovered the Normandy Restaurant that made even better fries and gravy. we became regulars at the normandy and got to know the owners and the other regulars as well. it was fun! that is, until we were diagnosed with Celiac Disease and had to stop eating there. soon after, the Normandy unfortunately closed down. fries were so hard to give up!

do french fries contain gluten, you ask?  well, not exactly. potatoes are gluten free, and so are french fries, that is unless they are flavored with beef stock or if they are cooked in the same oil as other wheat based (breaded) products which is how most french fries are prepared. the cross contamination of gluten is highly likely to make someone with celiac disease quite sick.

three fry-free years later, andrea bought a deep fryer, and we had fun making a few batches of hand cut potato fries at home. but we were still determined to find fries on the go. after asking around to almost every burger and fry shack in town, we found New York Fries and Moderne Burger to be perfectly gluten free when it comes to how they prepare their hand cut potato fries. now we just need to find gluten free gravy…(watch for a future post on gravy!)

the most important french fry questions to ask are:
·      do you cook the french fries with other foods that may contain wheat or gluten?
·      are your french fries made fresh or are they pre-packaged?
·      can I read the package ingredients?
·      do you season your fries, and if so, can I have mine unseasoned?

we highly recommend trying New York Fries, found in most major mall food courts such as Oakridge Centre, Metropolis at Metrotown and Pacific Center malls.  Moderne Burger, located in Kitsilano, is also excellent (and addictive) and they accommodate wheat free diets, just ask for no bun!  (more on Moderne Burger soon!)

I am sure you will invent of find something! That restaurant, Moderne Burger, looks so fine...thanks for the link on your post! BTW...that is a really cook feature you have at the bottom there!

(Hmmm...not sure what to make of my verification word but it is...'haras'....GRIN!)
