glutino makes gluten free ‘ritz’-like cracker

cracker, originally uploaded by balakov.
living gluten free automatically eliminates so many many things. entire brands and categories of food gone forever. glazed doughnuts, sigh, are still a sore point. and really fluffy cake.

while I challenge anyone to make a gluten free doughnut, I know the desert market is capped, there are tons of great desert options gluten free in vancouver (more to come on this topic, obviously). it is the cracker and bread alternatives that are more limited in selection, and harder to adjust to. I came across a cracker line at Whole Foods called Glutino Original Crackers. they come in a few flavours like multigrain and cheese, and all are gluten free. Glutino is also a dedicated gluten free facility. I was pleasantly surprised that these crackers taste like Ritz crackers! besides, the only gluten free option so far has been plain old rice crackers.

gluten free can still be misleading and it is important to always check the ingredient listings of everything you buy. a few years ago on vacation in California, I found a package of rice crackers with a celiac foundation stamp of approval on the package. when I checked the ingredients listed on the back, the first ingredient was wheat flour. really? wheat-rice crackers endorsed by the celiac foundation? hmmm that is misleading enough to make someone quite sick if they didnt check.

Mary’s Gone Crackers are another option, we almost didn't believe they were gluten free when our mom presented them at our last easter dinner. they come in sophisticated flavors too, like caraway, herb, and onion, a perfect entertaining cracker. they are crispy, and hold toppings well. in addition to being gluten and wheat free, they are also vegan-dairy free, kosher, organic, non-gmo, have no trans fats, no hydrogenated oils, and are high in fiber. the only ingredient to watch out for is soy, they use tamari sauce to flavor the crackers.

another cracker we have recently found at Choices Market is the Ener G brand wheat-free crackers, which are also gluten-free, milk-free, lactose-free, and egg-free (caution: they are not soy-free). They are a nice large cracker that you can add a nice large slice of cheese to, they have a nice texture, but are a bit crumbly. you can find the Ener G brand of gluten free foods locally by clicking on the 'where to buy' tab on the Ener G homepage.

Glutino crackers are also great with L’Ancetre cheese which is also organic and gluten free. Glutino, Mary’s Gone Crackers and L’Ancetre cheeses are available at Whole Foods Market, Choices Market and Save-On Foods.

enjoy your cheese and crackers!  Robyn.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried Mary's gone crackers and they were good. No spophisticated flavours out my way at Save-On but now that I know they come in other varieties I can ask for them. Saw Glutino as well and now perhaps I will try them. I have a question; in processed cheese spreads, cream cheese etc....is there any GF present to be looking for? Just wondered.

Love the new 'doo dads' on your sidebar....the - 'blogging GF free' is so cool!

Hi Trish,

Andrea and I will research cheese spreads and post our results soon. One thing to be mindful of is modified milk ingredients that are typically contained in most processed dairy and cheese products. Modified milk ingredients are considered to be questionable for containing gluten, so in these instances, calling the manufactuer is recommended to be sure. More to come! The L'Ancetre cheese referenced in the post has no modified ingredients at all and melts very well too!
