gluten free brazillian-style cheesebuns made in vancouver

Quejos Cheesebuns are brazillian-style cheesebuns, made locally here in Vancouver, that are wheat free, gluten free, and yeast free. the buns are made using flour from the tuberous root of the cassava plant, called manioc flour, or tapioca flour, which is a food staple in Brazil. fortunately for us gluten intolerant/ sensitive people, this flour is perfectly safe, as can be seen on the list of foods allowed by the Canadian Celiac Association.

the cheesebuns are quite dense, similar to a bagel, but they are wonderful toasted. there are seven flavors to choose from: extra cheese, sundried tomato and basil, flaxseed and almond, fresh spinach and onion, fresh jalapeno, fresh garlic, and black olives. you can purchase these buns fresh daily at the bakery/ café located at 4129 Main Street (near King Edward Avenue), or buy them frozen at many grocers in the lower mainland. they also sell day-olds at the shop at discounted prices.

in the shop you can order sandwiches on the bun of your choice to eat in or take out, my personal favorite is the Rio de Janeiro, which is cucumber, lettuce, and cheese, with a very delicious mustard-mayo combo. I was here recently with non-Celiac friends who gladly devoured them, and also commented on how well-priced they are. when I first tried this sandwich two years ago, I couldn’t believe I was eating such a tasty sandwich that is also gluten free. I often make them at home now too.

in addition to the regular cheesebuns, the bakery also makes soya Quejos buns, which are lactose and rennet free, as well as other gluten free, wheat free, and dairy free products. try the muffins, especially my favorite, the chocolate chip and banana muffins. another great product is the 10” thin crust Quejos Pizza Shell, which is what I found out Tonina’s Catering & Deli (a neighbor of Quejos) actually used for the pizza at the Party For Architects I attended a while back. (see original post here)

what I love about eating and shopping here is that not only are their products delicious, but they offer samples of most of their sweet foods for you try before you buy, and they also sell a few other gluten free grocery items you can pick up while you are here, such as gluten free rice pasta, crackers, and cassava chips.

for a complete list of where to find Quejos locally, and in Toronto, have a look at their website. don’t live in Vancouver? don’t worry! they can ship Quejos products to destinations in Canada and the United States via courier. Follow the link below to their website for more information. enjoy! Andrea.
