double kudos to joey’s gluten free menu

Joey is one of the first restaurants in Vancouver to develop a gluten free menu, and I recently (finally) had the chance to try it out. I had the Ahi Tuna Salad—it was a toss up between this and the Bombay Butter Chicken—and it was excellent! when Andrea and I began our blog, Joey’s was one of the first places we contacted for more information. I was curious about why they decided to accommodate the gluten free diet, and to maybe see why more restaurants are not following the lead. here is what the great staff at Joey’s had to say about it all;

R. how are the gluten free items prepared in the kitchen?
J. the gluten free items are prepared with specific guidelines to ensure there is no cross contamination. utensils and cookware are cleaned prior to use and all dishes are prepared from scratch omitting the ingredients that contain gluten.

R. what inspired Joey to develop a gluten free menu?
J. over the years we have noticed the number of guests living with celiac has increased significantly and, consequently, there has been strong demand for us to create such a menu.

R. was it difficult to implement a gluten free menu?
J. no, we simply looked at our menu items and determined which could most easily and safely be modified to fall into the gluten free category.

R. what kind of education is provided to staff regarding gluten and allergies such as Celiac Disease?
J. the servers and cooks are taught about this condition (and other allergens in initial training and throughout their tenure), what gluten is and how to communicate with our celiac guests to ensure that they are confident in our abilities. the process includes having the chef and manager oversee the production of these items when they are ordered.

the gluten free menu is currently not available on Joey’s website, but it will be posted soon. the gluten free menu is a separate sheet from the main menu so remember to ask for it when you arrive. Joey will also create a personalized menu to suit any other dietary restrictions, simply email before you plan to go.

Joey Restaurants are located in Vancouver, Coquitlam, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Seattle and Bellevue, Washington.  Robyn.

Wow....who knew?! Kudos to Joeys!!! Great announcement and just before the Olympic visitors start to arrive. How can visitors find you when they come to Vancouver, are you listed anywhere? Your blog is a great resource for locals and visitors alike!

Hey Robyn, with all this 'on the scene' interviewing you are going to have to get a dictaphone, camera and the whole crew along!

I am celiac and was excited when I saw Joey's gf menu. I ate at Joey's on Broadway last summer and I believe I was glutened. I won't be going back.

hi again cally! thats terrible that you got sick from joey's gluten free menu! this is important for us to know so we can be accurate in our recommendation of this restaurant. are you celiac? did you complain? when i worked with them in the preparation of my blog post they were very committed to the menu and ensuring a safe environment for the preparation of the gluten free menu items. i guess at the end of the day, unless the restaurant is a designated gluten free facility, we are always taking a chance when we eat out and its a good reminder to be very cautious and ask lots of questions!

Hi Robyn: I talked with the server when I ordered my meal and actually asked for the salmon to be pan seared as I didn't want it on the grill (fear of cross contamination). I think the veg were cooked on the grill. I phoned the restaurant and the manager offered to take care of a guest and me at a future visit. If a restaurant offers a gluten free menu, they should be conscious of exactly what that means. I have talked with chefs and managers at other restaurants in town that state that they are aware of Celiacs and can accommodate people with gluten intolerance and have found that they weren't really that knowledgable. Have you heard of Ming's Law in Massachusetts?

We ate at Joeys at Bentall One (in downtown Vancouver) and enjoyed a fabulous meal. Our server was knowledgeable about gf. The steaks were delicious (although a bit strong on the peppercorns) and we asked for almond basmati rice substitute for mashed potatoes, but only received plain brown rice (a bit disappointing). The music was quite loud in the restaurant and difficult for table conversation, but our favorite dinner restaurant of our holiday in Vancouver!
