gluten free at greens organic & natural market

there's a new organic grocer in town, at the corner of west broadway and maple street in kitsilano. Greens Organic & Natural Market opened just a few weeks ago, and I decided to stop by today and have a look at what's in store! the store is not overly big, which is nice, it has a very clean and modern aesthetic, and extremely helpful and friendly staff. inside there is a small health and beauty corner, a deli counter, a meat counter, and a coffee shop, Beens Organic Coffee Bar. however, more importantly are there any gluten free products? YES! and more than your average small grocer.

I toured around the aisles and here are some of the gluten free products you will find at greens:

glutino frozen and packaged foods from mac and cheese to cookies
enjoy life chocolate chips and cookies
food for life brown rice tortillas
pamela's products baking mixes
bob's red mill gluten free flours and mixes
tinkyada rice pastas
lundeberg rice, rice cakes, rice chips, and risottos
bragg apple cider vinegar
larabar energy bars
elevate me! energy bars
mi-del cookies, including animal-shaped arrowroot cookies, the first gluten free toddler cookie I've found
simply natural organic salad dressings
oogies flavoured popcorn

one gluten free item that is missing, however, is fresh gluten free bread rather than frozen bread. I looked for quejos cheesebuns in the freezer section, and one of the stock clerks saw me looking around for something and asked if he could help me find what I was looking for. when he realized it was an item they don't currently stock,  he wrote it down on his pad of paper and asked if I would like someone to call me when they get it in! I will be in grocery store heaven if they have them stocked the next time I go there for groceries. the only other thing I would point out, and may do so next time since they seem so receptive and keen, is to provide a labeling system that identifies gluten free products, similar to the blue label at choices and the orange label at whole foods.

otherwise this just might be my new favorite grocer. the other added benefit is that they have a loyalty card that allows you to use your points towards goods or services at other local businesses that "also believe in a sustainable and healthy community". these other businesses are: semperviva yoga, integrative healing arts, and rocky mountian flatbread, my new favorite kid-friendly-gluten-free-crust-available pizza place!

to find out more about greens, and their commitment to the community and the environment, check out their website, or head over for your groceries and ask them in person.  Andrea.
