gluten free on the drive: drive organics

drive organics, originally uploaded by leedman.
commercial drive is a signature neighborhood in vancouver, also known as the latin quarter, or simply 'the drive'. it is home to significant italian, asian, latin american, east indian, and african communities, in addition to musicians, artists, and activists. the residential areas house people of all ages, including many young families. the commercial area is a vibrant mix of coffee shops, bars, restaurants, music venues, alternative shops, as well as an active street festival culture. some notable events include the parade of lost souls, the stone soup festival, the east side culture crawl, and many more.

we will be featuring several business in this unique and popular neighborhood that we're sure locals already have their thumb on, but for vancouverites living farther afield, or visitors to our beautiful city, we are going to guide you to some excellent businesses that provide gluten free products and dining. the first of many is Drive Organics, a purveyor of organic fruits and vegetables as well as many other natural products, and an excellent variety of gluten free foods, snacks, and personal care products. I recently toured the aisles taking note of most of the gluten free products to share with you. at drive organics you will find:

lundeberg rice, and rice chips
oogies flavoured popcorn
pirate's booty
food should taste good tortilla chips
pamela's products cookies
enjoy life snack bars
arico natural foods company cookies
patsypie cookies
plum-m-good rice cakes (local)
blue diamond nut thins crackers
hol-grain brown rice crackers
mary's organic crackers
gluten freeda's oatmeal (pure uncontaminated oats) and burritos
nature's path organic cereals (local)
simply natural organic salad dressings and condiments
san-j organic wheat free tamari sauce
tinkyada brown rice pasta
kinnikinnick breads (canadian)
food for life breads
o'doughs breads
quejos cheesebuns (local)
organic food bar
lärabar energy bars
taste of nature bars (canadian)
desert essence body care products

this is quite a list! if you find yourself in the neighborhood, you can shop for all your gluten free groceries at Drive Organics. if you are reading this from another city, then hopefully we have introduced you to some gluten free products you may not have been aware of, or enticed you to visit! in addition to the dedicated gluten free items listed above you will also find a good selection of local organic produce, diary products, and meats.

one item that caught my eye is their grassfed beef. when Robyn and I were first diagnosed with Celiac Disease back in 2005, we both went on a strict gluten free diet, and that included meat from animals that are fed grains. we were both suffering badly from our different symptoms that we cut out anything related to grain. to this day we still do not know for certain whether or not meat from animals fed grains actually poses a risk? our doctors have said no, however we still have a slight uncertainty about it. do you have any thoughts on this topic? if so please leave a comment!

more gluten free info on vancouver's commercial drive area coming soon. until then enjoy the drive!  Andrea.

I'd been diagnosed with Celiac Disease for only 6 months when I moved from the states to Vancouver last summer. Back in California, I'd only just started to get the hang of how to eat safely, when suddenly I had to start all over again in a whole new country, without any of the restaurants I knew about and with very different products in the grocery store. Your blog has been SO helpful to me since I've found it. I was about to give up in despair after a horrible crouton incident at the Milestones in Yaletown (the one in Burnaby is -awesome- so I thought they'd have the same procedures everywhere...BIG mistake). But after reading your entries I've tried so many products and great places to eat that I'm feeling encouraged and hopeful again. Do please keep talking about the places "everybody knows about", because I'm sure I am not the only one still learning. :)
