gluten free menu at milestones grill + bar

milestones originally uploaded by photostream.
I recently discovered that Milestones Grill + Bar has a gluten free menu! this information really came in handy one day recently when I was on my lunch break from work. I normally head to Whole Foods at Cambie and Broadway to pick something up, but that day their kitchen had had a fire, and their refrigerators weren't working. the store was a disaster. I was panicking wondering where or what I was going to eat for lunch!

I remembered that Robyn had told me about Milestones gluten free menu, and fortunately there is a Milestones upstairs from Whole Foods, this is their Crossroads location. I went up to the bar, and asked for their gluten free menu, and right away the server knew what I was talking about and brought it to me.

the gluten free menu selection is small, however, there are enough items to satisfy most people for lunch or dinner. there are two starters (salads), three entrees, and two deserts.
  • Milestones' Caprese Salad
  • Milestones' California Spring Salad
  • add fire-grilled wild pacific coho salmon to either salad
  • Grilled Mediterranean Chicken
  • Tomato Basil Brown Rice Spaghettini
  • Certified Angus Beef Top Sirloin
  • Ganache Torte
  • Premium Italian Vanilla Gelato
on my first visit I ordered the Tomato Basil Brown Rice Spaghettini to go. I got back to my office and was thrilled to be eating a freshly cooked, hot meal that only took 15 minutes to go and pick up. so convenient, and so tasty! on my recent second visit I ordered the Grilled Mediterranean Chicken, and this went way beyond my expectations, in fact my lunch guests were drooling over my lunch, and commenting on how healthy it looked. here is a description of the entree: grilled chicken breast, layered with goat cheese, on a bed of asian greens, chickpeas, and roasted grape tomatoes. I ate every last morsel, and I have been craving this meal ever since!!

the gluten free menu is only available in the restaurant, and is currently not on the Milestones website. the Tomato Basil Brown Rice Spaghettini is also part of the regular menu, so kudos to Milestones for including at least one menu item that is inherently gluten free, not just adapted to be gluten free! you can click here to see their detailed allergen guide. Milestones has locations in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, you can click here to find a location near you.

have you tried the Milestones gluten free menu yet? was your experience good or bad, we would love to hear about it!  Andrea.

I love Milestones! I've eaten at several and can highly recommend the one in Burnaby; they always take really good care of me and seem happy to have me as a customer.

I would definitely advise against eating at the Milestones in Yaletown though, I had a very bad experience there last summerth . . . I always try to be really nice when I start asking about a restaurant's gluten-free food prep policies, and I was a bit put off when the host there got impatient with me and assured me that they really -did- know what they were doing. So we went in to eat, and after all the assurances they volunteered that they'd mix my salad in a separate bowl, the waiter brought me a a caesar salad that had a crouton mixed into it (which I only found after I'd eaten half the salad, and yeah, I got really sick later on).

I understand that mistakes happen, and the manager was very apologetic, but the waiter was very dismissive and acted like I'd personally ruined his day because I didn't want to eat anything else. He totally ignored me for the rest of the time my family and I were there, dragging his sleeve across my water glass repeatedly, and I sat there feeling like a freak and trying not to cry so my family wouldn't feel guilty about the experience.

Um, so yeah. Don't eat at the one in Yaletown and you're in for a real treat. :) The Mediterranean Chicken is my favorite.

thank you for sharing your experience Pseu Sue! i have had many experiences like this before as well, and i know our readers can relate too. i am glad the other locations have proven to be more professional than yaletown, that behavior is just unacceptable. there is so much emotion behind living gluten free that many are unaware of. the fact that most food can make us sick is a hard reality to live with. thank you again for your comment and for reading our blog!

I've been leery about trying Milestones again after I ordered the seafood salad with rice instead of noodles after the whole food spiel as it came with bits of noodle near the bottom of the rice.

When i pointed it out to the waitress she was all "Oops, I forgot to mention it to the kitchen....". My father and husband took a strip off of her (People can die form allergies etc) and she went to have the kitchen remake the meal. She also sent the manager over who apologized and stated that he would personally make sure my meal was correct.

My second salad had noodles in it as well. We did not see the manager again.

Pre celiac I was a fairly regular Milestones dinner.

Gluten free diet is a diet completely free of gluten. It is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, malts and triticale. It is also used as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent often hidden under dextrin. Thanks a lot...

The Milestones in the West End (at Davie and Denman) is very good about food allergies. I ate there with a friend who is violently allergic to seafood (we're talking anaphylactic shock) and the waiter was excellent. He made sure her meal was cooked separately and was very pleasant about the whole experience.

I'm gluten-intolerant, not celiac so if I get glutened a little it's hard for me to tell. I have never to my knowledge been glutened by milestones and I've eaten there a lot. I order from the gluten-free menu. Definitely try the one in the west end rather than Yaletown. The staff are much more pleasant as well.

I ordered the Tomato Basil Brown Rice Spaghettini in Ottawa Milestones and the next day my sinuses were terribly stuffed up and my intestines were unhappy! There's no mention of MSG in their menu, but they must have put something in that dish!

I've eaten at Milestones often in the past. I've always enjoyed their salads and appetizers. I hope this is not a trend.

thanks for posting about your experience, anonymous. I will forward all of these comments to Milestones for their feedback. consistency is so important in building trust that their gluten free menu is safe.

Awesome. Tasty and satisfying. Milestones has always been good to me.
The servers are always good to double-check about gluten, and the chef at Crossroads has come out a couple of times just to clarify.
Love the place!

They have a gluten-free burger now!
Awesome. Tasty and satisfying. Milestones has always been good to me.
The servers are always good to double-check about gluten, and the chef at Crossroads has come out a couple of times just to clarify.
Love the place!
