gluten free eggs benny at aphrodite’s in kitsilano
I know of Aphrodite’s Organic Café & Pie Shop on fourth avenue (near alma) because of their gluten free pies, but the last time I went there, about two years ago, pie was the only thing they served that was dedicated gluten free. their pies are amazing by the way! the rest of the menu was up to interpretation as to what might be safe. like an egg breakfast, with no toast. or a salad with no croutons, you know what I mean. so I ate a plain salad and a piece of gluten free pie while my husband chowed down on a huge sandwhich. he left full, and I left annoyed.
I thought I would check out Aphrodite's menu online to see if anything had changed before I confirmed our lunch date there. I was pleasantly surprised to find that many of their menu items can now be substituted with gluten free bread, gluten free english muffins, or gluten free tortillas! wow that opens up almost the entire menu! please note that their online menus are samples and may differ to what is currently being offered in the café. in fact eggs benny is not mentioned on their online brunch menu.
when I arrived we were given the brunch and lunch menus, and right away I noticed the eggs benny, actually I couldn’t believe my eyes! I haven’t eaten eggs benny since I was diagnosed with celiac disease five years ago. I checked on the sauce, and the waitress assured me it was also gluten free. the eggs are served a corn flour english muffin, which wasn’t quite the same texture as regular english muffins, but it was actually really good. the bacon is from oyama sausage, and the dish comes with a fresh green salad and rosemary potatoes.
the good news…it was delicious! I will definitely go again for the eggs benny, as well as to try some of the other menu items that can be made gluten free.
the bad news…the dish costs $18, and when the bill came I was surprised to see there was an extra $2 charge for the gluten free english muffin substitute, which the server did not mention. however, even if she did, I don’t really have a choice! grrrrrr.
the price is a bit steep, however all the ingredients are organic, farm fresh, and local. the english muffin, however is not made on site, and as far as the server knew they purchase them from a supermarket chain, but could not remember the name of the brand.
we will be enquiring with the owners to find out more about their decision to offer gluten free, why there is a surcharge, and where the gluten free items come from…stay tuned! Andrea

This is good to note. What a great 'find' again! It must be so encouraging to find these gems of places where one can order food in confidence. Yes, I have always wondered....why is it that one has to pay so much more for 'health' when it is regular food. And then...a real surcharge...hmmmm.....
Looking forward to more reviews and some of those 'holiday recipes' that might be coming? Grin - December 3, 2009 at 5:00 AM
