gluten free bagels and cream cheese

when I think of bagels, I am always reminded of a trip I took to Montreal years ago to visit a friend attending university there, and she introduced me to the most amazing Montreal-style bagels. we bought a big bag of them and I am pretty sure I gobbled them up the fastest, they were so good. gluten free bagels, however, are not commonly available and some would argue that there might be no point in trying to make them gluten free…would they even taste reasonable to eat? I missed the ability to eat bagels and cream cheese, and so I decided to give them a try.

Whole Foods carries Glutino bagels in a few varieties; plain, sesame, poppy seed and cinnamon raisin. I decided to buy them only if I could find safe cream cheese first. thankfully that wasn’t such a tall order, I found Liberté cream cheese in the dairy aisle, and was happy to see that it contained only whole milk and cream ingredients, without anything modified.

Glutino’s bread products are best toasted, but the bagels tasted fine on their own as well (although newly diagnosed celiac’s may argue with the taste, gluten free does take getting used to). the bagels are very dense and have a bit of a sweet taste, but combined with Liberte’s cream cheese I was quite surprised at what a great snack it turned out to be. the shelf life of Glutino bread products are generally quite good as well, if stored in the fridge. I am not sure I could eat them as often (or as quickly) as traditional bagels given how dense gluten free varieties are, but they are worth having in your freezer.

Enjoy Life Foods also makes cinnamon raisin and plain bagels. I have yet to see these products at my local gluten free hangouts like Whole Foods and Choices Market, so if you have tried Enjoy Life or Glutino bagels, post your review in the comments section! Robyn.
