gluten free cookies at starbucks!

I recently posted an article wondering when Starbucks might ever carry gluten free products in Canada, especially in light of their unsuccessful gluten free valencia cake offered in the US. I got to talking to one of the staff at Starbucks the other day, who also happens to be gluten intolerant, and she showed me Lucy’s, gluten free prepackaged cookies that Starbucks now carries! at first, I wasn’t sure if they were gluten free, since the package indicates wheat, barley, rye, milk and egg free, but not gluten free. ‘specially selected oats’ are also listed in the ingredient list, without a clear indication if they are gluten free oats. after visiting Lucy’s website, it is clearly noted that all of their cookies are gluten free! Lucy’s cookies come in four flavors; sugar, cinnamon, chocolate chip, and oatmeal (gluten free oats). each package contains four small cookies (40 g) and sells at Starbucks for $1.75.

it is important to note that even gluten free oats can also cause reactions to those who are sensitive to avenin, a protein found in oats. physicians recommend that anyone who is celiac considering adding oats to a gluten free diet, should ensure that they only consume oats certified to be gluten free, and should be eaten in limited amounts per day; one half to three fourth cups per day for adults, and one fourth cup per day for children.

i have tried the sugar cookies so far and i thought they tasted great! i cant wait to try the other flavors. Robyn

I thought that Barely and Rye have a certain level of Gluten in them? Wouldn't this make Lucy's cookies have gluten?

Hoping to help....

yes, barley and rye contain gluten. Lucy's cookies do not contain barley or rye and are therefore safe for those on a gluten free diet. they do contain oats though which can be a problem for some.

thanks for your comment.
