moderne burger

moderne burger, originally uploaded by kloppster.
mmm Moderne Burger. need I say more? for those of you wondering why I am posting an article about a burger place on a gluten free blog, be prepared to eat your heart out.

Moderne Burger not only makes safe hand cut french fries using organic potatoes cooked in canola oil, but the steak burger is free of gluten as well! the steak burgers are hand made from 100% beef and contains no fillers or preservatives and is low in sodium and saturated fat. note that the ground turkey and veggie burgers do contain gluten. typically, hamburgers contain fillers that also contain gluten, and a lot of restaurants also use wheat crumbs while preparing their beef patties. as you may recall from our french fry post, potatoes are naturally gluten free, but french fries almost always become contaminated with wheat in the deep frying process as other wheat based products are cooked in the same oil.

the shakes are also made with natural ice cream and no extra additives or flavorings are added to the shakes, although there are malted options on the menu, just ask for the regular shake (strawberry and chocolate are my personal favorites).

remember to order your steak burger with no bun! the owners Wendy and Peter are very accommodating and will always take the time to discuss ingredients and food preparation with you.

the Moderne Burger experience is pure indulgence, and is a place that can accommodate sensitive diets, and its one of my all time favorite places to eat. Moderne Burger is located at 2507 West Broadway in Kitsilano. just look for the neon palm tree! Robyn.

The Wallflower Cafe on Main Street has Glutino buns for their burgers, all you need to do is ask.

thanks chris!

andrea and I have been to the wallflower, and they use kinnikinnick buns. we were a little disappointed that this was the only option, and several items on the menu are not safe for celiacs.
but, we were lucky enough to meet the owner that day who is very passionate about food, and providing gluten free and vegan alternatives. we provided a few recommendations to help improve their menu as well as food handling procedures in the kitchen to avoid cross contamination. we were delighted to hear that the wallflower is interested in expanding their gluten free options and they are planning out a gluten free menu right now. andrea and i are helping review their draft menu, and they have already removed wheat flour from the kitchen based on one of our recommendations!

thanks for reading our blog!

If the beef burger is made on the same grill as the burgers that contain gluten, isn't there a possibility of cross contamination? My doctor thinks I am too vigilant (thus I don't eat out much). Do you ever learn to relax when you eat out?

hi cally,

moderne burger does not use the same grill for the burgers and buns. you should speak to peter when you are there next. he is the owner and is there almost every night. he will happily tell you how they minimize cross-contamination.

andrea and i have both become more relaxed eating out gradually over the last few years. i just make sure that my selection of restaurants have been carefully researched, and i try to talk to the owners/chef if i can. now that i have a few trusted places to go, i dont have to ask questions each time. this is also partially what inspired andrea and i to start this blog.

at the end of the day, there is always a possibility of cross-contamination, even in your own home if you share your kitchen with non-celiacs. it is therefore important to know the right questions to ask and only eat at restaurants that at least know what gluten is!

thanks for your comments...
