movie night in canada

popcorn, originally uploaded by secret_canadian.
my friday nights sure aren't what they used to be now that I have an eighteen-month old daughter. my night starts out at the grocery store, and I actually like it. in fact I look forward to it! no traffic, no crowds in the store, amen! I also know that when I get home, it will be time to put my daughter to bed, and then my husband and I have the night to ourselves. friday night has become our night, it's our movie night!

I love going to theaters to see films, and although I cannot confirm whether or not the buttered popcorn is gluten free or not, I am certain that most of the candy and snacks are not. I do not go to the theater so much now, but when I did, I always made sure I took my own buttered popcorn to be on the safe side. not only does it taste so much better than theater popcorn, but it is so much cheaper too!

in my humble opinion no movie night should go without snacks and popcorn. whether you are at home or going to the theater, here are some great movie snack ideas, and they are all gluten free.

1. home made popcorn
any brand will do, Orville Redenbacher's Original Gourmet Popping Corn is a good option. if you prefer organic popping corn try Eden Organic Popcorn. I always use Avalon Dairy's Certified Organic Butter because it contains no color. you can choose either salted or unsalted. cooking hint, I always use olive oil when cooking popcorn, it gives it a very nice light flavour.

2. prepared popcorn
at the moment my favorite flavoured popcorn is Oogie's Gourmet Popcorn. it comes in nine flavours: spicy chipotle & lime, sundried tomato & parmesan, white cheddar, smoked gouda, romano & pesto, asiago & cracked pepper, caprese, chili con queso, and movie lovers. my personal favorite is white cheddar. you can read more about Oogie's on their website, where there is also a helpful store finder. I buy mine at Choices Market. there are great customer comments on Oogie's facebook page too.

3. licorice
sadly for anyone on a gluten free diet, twizzlers are now a distant memory. fortunately the Gluten Free Mall carries the Candy Tree brand of wheat free and gluten free licorice. there are several flavours such as black, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry licorice. you can also buy Candy Tree Licorice through Amazon.com.

4. candy
Robyn and I have been addicted to Sharkies Organic Fruit Chews for some time now. shaped like little colorful sharks, they are fun to eat, and so yummy. we wrote about them recently, along with some other gluten free candy options.

ok, gotta run, my husband is calling me to come and join him. tonight's showing: Star Trek!  have a nice weekend everyone!  Andrea.

grin...popcorn is my downfall I am afraid...healthy or not. And I must admit...I love that butter. Olive oil eh? I'll have to try that. Last week the son and I brought in a bag of pea pods and carrot sticks to the movie. Of course, I did break down and got popcorn as well. Here is to best intentions..grin.

Choices is now carrying R.W. Garcia tortilla chips. They only have two varieties at the moment. Hopefully they will carry more - the sweet potato and the flax chips are nummy! Gourmet Warehouse and Planet Organic also sell them.

thank you for your comments trish and cally! its amazing how many great gluten free treats are coming out on the market...but andrea's favorite has and always will be popcorn!

cally thank you for the recommendation on R.W. Garcia chips, i will definitely try them! they look very yummy from their website! i also appreciate you letting us know where you can buy them, since andrea and i dont always have time to visit other stores outside of our neighborhood although this is something we are trying to do more of to help those that dont live near choices or whole foods.

I think it is important to share. I have been so blessed to have a friend whose daughter is Celiac. She has guided me since my diagnoses. Now we help each other out. It certainly makes life easier when you have a network of people supporting each other. Thanks for making that possible!
