high crow gluten free baking company (+ giveaway)

we discovered a great new gluten free baking business in Vancouver recently, called High Crow Gluten Free Foods. I met with Julie Desgroseillers to find out more about how she started her business and the amazing products she produces. Julie’s gluten free products range from cookies, four kinds of bread, hamburger and hot dog buns, and even wedding cakes! (see end of post for details on the giveaway)

Julie's BSc in Dietetics, her experience as a product designer and pastry maker, and her life time dream to have her own bakery someday form the foundation of her business. Julie enjoys baking foods that are nutritious, and reflect a handcrafted, homemade quality and these are ultimately the goals that drive High Crow.

Julie was keen to take on the challenge of gluten free and dairy free baking even though she is not celiac or gluten intolerant, and she experimented until she started getting rave reviews from her taste testers both big and small. all High Crow baking is prepared in a dedicated gluten free commercial kitchen in Delta, BC, which trust us is a rarity. even with her new gluten free kitchen, Julie still buys her ingredients cautiously and buys direct from the manufacturers to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

Julie likes baking with sorghum and chickpea flours because she prefers the nutritional values and the texture that these flours offer. she also uses millet and rice flour, and has been experimenting with rice bran because of its nutritional qualities. in all her baking Julie tries to achieve a product that is high in fiber and protein, and low in sodium. Julie uses soy milk instead of regular milk, but she can make products soy free on request.

High Crow has many sweet and delicious treats to choose from like cookies, brownies, blondies, and mini loaves, but after trying many of her products, I think it is Julie's gluten free breads that set her apart from anything else I have tried. Julie sells four different breads: millet & rice bread, sorghum bread, chickpea & sorghum bread, and flax seed bread. what is also really exciting is that Julie also makes dinner rolls, hamburger buns, and hot dog buns! hello summer barbeques!

any brides who are looking for a gluten free/ dairy free wedding cake, look no further as Julie also bakes and sells cakes to Buttercup Custom Cakes, a wedding cake designer, who then comes to Julie's gluten free kitchen to decorate the cakes, to ensure no cross contamination.

currently Julie is selling her products through the Steveston and Vancouver Winter Farmer's Markets, and will also be at the following summer markets: the Royal City Farmer's Market (New West) and the Kitsilano Market. Julie also takes orders by phone or email, which can be picked up at her commercial kitchen (see website for more info) or you can pick up at one of her markets. you can now also find High Crow products at the Wired Monk Cafe in Abbotsford, as well as the ABC Country Restaurant in Abbostford. I know Julie is also in talks to sell her products at other retail outlets in the lower mainland, and once those locations have been confirmed we will let you know.

this giveaway is now closed. thanks to all who entered, a winner will be announced shortly.  Andrea.

the winner of our anniversary giveaway is…

kari! you are the winner of our one year anniversary giveaway!

please send us an email to discuss how you would like your desert essence organics shampoo and body wash sent to you. thanks for your comment, and I also dont like having to make my own lunch for work all the time, and andrea can attest to how difficult it is to eat gluten free at UBC. thanks to all who entered and for providing such great feedback on our blog! we have enjoyed talking to many of you about living gluten free in vancouver and we look forward to posting about some great new topics this year!

there were definitely two common themes in the challenges you have described in the comments. the availability of gluten free products, and awareness of cross contamination, and with the gluten free diet in general, were the most common challenge areas for all of you. andrea and I agree that these are serious challenges facing those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance, and we hope that the information we provide on our blog ultimately make it easier to be gluten free.

gluten free vancouver turns one (+ giveaway)

when andrea and I started our blog last November, our goal was to provide a gluten free resource for those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance that focused on lifestyle rather than simply recipes or medical research. we knew there was little to no resources on how to live with celiac disease day to day.
it's amazing to look back on our previously gluten filled lives, such as my third birthday party, pictured here. andrea cant wait to eat the cake! we knew what we were missing when we were diagnosed with celiac disease, and it is with this perspective that shapes our discussion on topics like where to find gluten free personal care products, where to shop, and where to find great tasting gluten free food on the go.
our year in review includes some of our most favorite gluten free topics and I will start with our most popular, gluten free beer! ironically, this was also one of the first posts of 2010. we wanted to start the new year off with a sweet cupcake recipe in January and gluten free hot chocolate for Valentines Day in February. in March, we had the pleasure of working with the Wallflower Café’s Lisa Hewlett on their new gluten free menu. some long overdue taxes were finally paid in April after researching how to claim the incremental cost of gluten free food on your tax return.
May was a busy month discovering not only Homestead Specialty Baking but the most divine gluten free pancakes at Brown Dog Café. in June, I enjoyed writing celiac in the city about the challenges of dating with severe food allergies (thank you to all of our readers who provided such positive feedback on this topic!). gluten free vancouver was also featured on Global TV’s One Bite at a Time with Registered Dietician Melodie Yong. our excitement continued when we found gluten free ice cream cones in the August heat wave.
this fall we explored gastown, and found gluten free tacos at La Taqueria on west hastings, and then recently enjoyed taking an extended vacation to palm springs, california.
over this past year while working away on our new blog, we have both experienced many personal life changes. Andrea went back to work after her maternity leave, she moved into the new Woodwards building to accommodate her growing family, and recently started daycare for my niece Pilar...a heart wrenching experience for any new mom! for me, I started a new job shortly after launching the blog that has kept me busy learning and traveling. I was heartbroken earlier this year after the end of a long term relationship, and while I felt positive when I wrote 'celiac in the city' back in June, my healing process took many more months. I also moved into Olympic Village at the end of the summer, and love my new space!
Andrea and I are both in new creative workspaces, and are excited for the year ahead...we will be launching our www.glutenfree-vancouver.ca website shortly, and expanding our ideas further into the community. we also plan to make a gluten free gingerbread house next month, as well as start a weekly gluten free cookie review on the blog. gluten free giveaway...
to celebrate the success of our first year of gluten free vancouver, we want to offer one of our favorite gluten free products to one lucky reader! we are giving away a desert essence organics unscented body wash and shampoo! all you have to do to enter the giveaway is comment on our blog and tell us what challenges or obstacles you face living gluten free day to day. the entry deadline is midnight on tuesday november 30th. the winner will be announced on the blog on wednesday december 1st.
together, and through our blog, we hope to create more awareness of celiac disease and hopefully make gluten free foods more accessible to those that need it most.

a winner!

and the winner is…

Sarah! you are the winner of Gluten Free Vancouver’s second giveaway for a $25 gift certificate to the Brown Dog Café!  congratulations!  please contact us by email (see contact tab above) and let us know where we can send the gift certificate to, and remember it is valid until July 31, 2010. we hope you enjoy your honeymoon here in Vancouver!

thanks to all of our loyal readers who entered the contest and for sharing candidly your gluten free experiences. while everyone’s story of why they eat gluten free is different, there are so many similarities in the general symptoms as well as the great feeling of relief many of you now feel eliminating gluten from your diets. gluten free is clearly not a ‘fad diet’ it is a medical need for most people.

thank you very much as well to the Brown Dog Café for participating in our giveaway and generously donating the gift card.

in the spirit of the contest rules, Andrea and I felt it was important to share our experiences of how we discovered that we are each celiac. even though we are sisters, our symptoms were completely different to the point that we were surprised that we had been suffering for years with the same condition.

Andrea and I were both diagnosed five and a half years ago, but I know for myself, I was suffering for at least 10-15 years. looking back, the first real sign came at age 14 when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (low thyroid) after becoming so tired and exhausted all the time, even after walking up a flight of stairs. in my 20’s, I developed lactose intolerance and eventually started getting terrible stomach aches from practically everything I ate.

for Andrea, she began to loose weight dramatically about one year before the diagnosis. she tried to gain weight with the help of a dietician, but most were only skilled in helping people loose weight!  our doctor told her she most likely had a parasite from her travels to Asia and South America, and offered her a heavy prescription, which she refused to take. Andrea also recalls having digestive discomfort like I did fifteen years before, when she was living in Japan in her 20's. she also experienced severe weight loss at this time, so she sought the help of a naturopath who tested her for food sensitivities. she was given a list of foods to avoid and foods to eat in limited quantities. Andrea followed this advise for a while, and she eventually regained her weight. gluten and celiac disease were never discussed however, and so her weight loss eventually returned, and she had no idea what to do about it or who could help her.

in 2005, I received the news first after taking a book on irritable bowel syndrome to my doctor demanding every test possible to find out what was wrong. of course I was told I wouldn’t have celiac disease, but it turned out that I certainly did. within the first few days of trying to come to terms with the news, I read that celiac disease is genetic, that all of your family members should be tested, and that weight loss is a common side effect…this pretty much screamed Andrea to me. she had been unknowingly suffering for just as long as I had but only obvious in her ability to gain weight. as much as I don’t wish this condition on anyone, I was happy that I had a partner in crime! we went through the biopsy process together as well and the rest is history! but, after about two years living gluten free, I remember saying to Andrea that she was lucky she never experienced any secondary disorders like a thyroid condition. I should have knocked on wood, because shortly thereafter, Andrea discovered she did indeed have a thyroid condition, but hers is hyperthyroidism (high thyroid) caused by Graves Disease. Graves is a tough one to manage, and it hasn’t been easy on Andrea. we plan to post more information about the celiac – thyroid connection soon, so stay tuned!

our full biographies and celiac stories will also be coming soon to our new website www.glutenfree-vancouver.ca

thank you again to everyone who entered the contest on our blog and on our facebook page!  Robyn + Andrea

vancouver's new brown dog cafe & giveaway!!!

there is a great new cafe in Vancouver called the Brown Dog Cafe located in the point grey neighborhood on west 10th avenue. the cafe just opened six weeks ago and is a family business run by Shona Pearson and her daughters Liz and Jennie. Shona is a chef by trade and her daughters suggested that they open a cafe where they could have fun working together while doing something they are each passionate about. Shona is passionate about cooking food, Liz is passionate about the food she eats, as she is vegan, and Jennie is a skilled barista. what you will find at the Brown Dog Cafe is an emphasis on fresh local ingredients and products, homecooking, and extremely friendly service. the best news is that Brown Dog can accommodate special dietary needs by offering many of their menu items as gluten free or vegan, and sometimes both. the cafe offers breakfast, brunch, and lunch, and even specialty coffees, Mario's Gelati, and crepes for anytime of day. yes, there is even a gluten free crepe! Brown Dog Cafe exclusively uses Terrelli Coffee which is locally roasted, sourced ethically, Italian style and is "super amazing," notes Liz. Shona and her daughters, while not gluten free themselves, are knowledgeable about Celiac Disease, and have researched the foods and ingredients on their gluten free menu carefully. their sausage for example, comes from a company called Two Rivers Specialty Meats which is committed to raising animals ethically and naturally. Shona's philosophy regarding gluten free is not to try to substitute gluten containing foods for gluten free alternatives, but rather make smart menu choices by offering items that are inherently gluten free; fresh pan-fried eggs, fruit salad, homemade soup, pan-fried homefries, chili, and salads, to name a few. Shona also offers gluten free baking, and I was lucky to try their banana bread on the day I was there! the banana bread was excellent, it was light and fluffy, and not too sweet. the only gluten free items that are outsourced are bread from O'Doughs, and crackers which are Crunchmaster brand. since Shona isn't gluten free herself, she really scrutinizes the taste quality of the gluten free food she cooks and serves. for example, when she first started testing her gluten free/ vegan pancake recipe, she said the initial results were terrible. she wouldn't serve them until they were perfect and acceptable to even a non-gluten free customer. I would have to say that these were without a doubt the best gluten free pancakes I have eaten. Shona not only perfected the taste, but also the texture, they were fluffy, and cooked through. what also impressed me is the fact that their prices are very reasonable, and they do not up-charge for gluten free, or gluten free substitutes. now here is the really good news! Shona and her daughters are offering one lucky person a $25 gift certificate to the Brown Dog Cafe, valid until July 31, 2010. the contest is open until midnight on Friday, May 28th 2010, and one lucky winner will be selected randomly on Saturday, May 29th 2010. ***this contest is now closed, thanks to everyone who entered! a winner!

and the winner is…

Tanya! you are the winner of a box of CocoaNymph chocolates, randomly selected by Andrea's daughter Pilar! please contact us so we can send you your chocolates!

thank you to all who provided comments on the types of gluten free related subjects you are most interested in and would like to see on our blog. we value your feedback!

it was interesting to read that many of you are looking for information about living gluten free on a budget. Andrea and I both struggle with the extra cost of living gluten free, and try to list grocery stores such as Costco or Buy Low Foods that carry gluten free for less. we loved the mention of Dan-d Market at 2696 West Broadway, and Planet Organics (Marie there is a location at 2755 Lougheed Highway in Port Coquitlam). we also recently featured how to claim the incremental cost of gluten free foods as a medical expense on your tax return.

I was also quite happy to read that many of you want to know where you can go out to eat, or find gluten free on the go. unlike Andrea who loves to cook (or at least knows how to cook), I on the other hand never caught the cooking bug. I do enjoy cooking certain dishes such as lasagna, and I would like to think I can cook if I have to, however I tend to fall back on the quick and easy…and gluten free…is not so easy sometimes!

watch for upcoming posts about a few more great local gluten free bakeries, product reviews, including a new cake from Ikea, and of course, more restaurant reviews such as Vij’s, Latitude, and Theresa’s on Commercial Drive.

we are also making a few changes to our labeling system on the blog so you can find the information you need quicker and easier. soon you will be able to search for blog posts by grocery store name labels such as ‘choices market’ in order to find the gluten free products that they carry. you will also be able to search our blog posts by neighborhood to read about various restaurants and events that are close to where you live.

stay tuned for our next giveaway…coming soon!  Robyn.

a winner!

and the winner is…

Sarah! you are the winner of Gluten Free Vancouver’s second giveaway for a $25 gift certificate to the Brown Dog Café!  congratulations!  please contact us by email (see contact tab above) and let us know where we can send the gift certificate to, and remember it is valid until July 31, 2010. we hope you enjoy your honeymoon here in Vancouver!

thanks to all of our loyal readers who entered the contest and for sharing candidly your gluten free experiences. while everyone’s story of why they eat gluten free is different, there are so many similarities in the general symptoms as well as the great feeling of relief many of you now feel eliminating gluten from your diets. gluten free is clearly not a ‘fad diet’ it is a medical need for most people.

thank you very much as well to the Brown Dog Café for participating in our giveaway and generously donating the gift card.

in the spirit of the contest rules, Andrea and I felt it was important to share our experiences of how we discovered that we are each celiac. even though we are sisters, our symptoms were completely different to the point that we were surprised that we had been suffering for years with the same condition.

Robyn.

high crow gluten free baking company (+ giveaway)

we discovered a great new gluten free baking business in Vancouver recently, called High Crow Gluten Free Foods.

Andrea and I are both in new creative workspaces, and are excited for the year ahead...we will be launching our www.glutenfree-vancouver.ca website shortly, and expanding our ideas further into the community. we also plan to make a gluten free gingerbread house next month, as well as start a weekly gluten free cookie review on the blog. gluten free giveaway...
to celebrate the success of our first year of gluten free vancouver, we want to offer one of our favorite gluten free products to one lucky reader! we are giving away a desert essence organics unscented body wash and shampoo! all you have to do to enter the giveaway is comment on our blog and tell us what challenges or obstacles you face living gluten free day to day. the entry deadline is midnight on tuesday november 30th. the winner will be announced on the blog on wednesday december 1st.
together, and through our blog, we hope to create more awareness of celiac disease and hopefully make gluten free foods more accessible to those that need it most.

high crow gluten free baking company (+ giveaway)

we discovered a great new gluten free baking business in Vancouver recently, called High Crow Gluten Free Foods.

Robyn.

Jennifer specializes in baking for those with special dietary needs, and her menu includes gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free baking. for her gluten free items, Jennifer uses Anita's Organic brown rice flour, sweet potato starch, and tapioca starch. while Homestead is not an exclusively gluten free boutique bakery, food safety is of utmost importance to Jennifer, and she takes special precautions to avoid cross contamination. Robyn and I are huge fans of Jennifer's fresh and delicious baking, and we have not once experienced any gluten reactions! only an addiction to her high quality baking!

a winner!

and the winner is…

Sarah! you are the winner of Gluten Free Vancouver’s second giveaway for a $25 gift certificate to the Brown Dog Café!  congratulations!  please contact us by email (see contact tab above) and let us know where we can send the gift certificate to, and remember it is valid until July 31, 2010. we hope you enjoy your honeymoon here in Vancouver!

thanks to all of our loyal readers who entered the contest and for sharing candidly your gluten free experiences. while everyone’s story of why they eat gluten free is different, there are so many similarities in the general symptoms as well as the great feeling of relief many of you now feel eliminating gluten from your diets. gluten free is clearly not a ‘fad diet’ it is a medical need for most people.

thank you very much as well to the Brown Dog Café for participating in our giveaway and generously donating the gift card.

in the spirit of the contest rules, Andrea and I felt it was important to share our experiences of how we discovered that we are each celiac. even though we are sisters, our symptoms were completely different to the point that we were surprised that we had been suffering for years with the same condition.

Robyn.
